After a two-year investigation, Alabama authorities have arrested a Jackson County man in the 2017 murder of his father.

Byron Keith Shirey, 58, of Dutton, Alabama, is charged in connection with the May 24, 2017, murder of his 78-year-old father, Charles Shirey, according to a press release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office in Scottsboro.

Authorities said the killing happened at Charles Shirey's home on County Road 372 and he had been killed by blunt force trauma, authorities said.

The arrest was the result of a two-year long investigation by the Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division and Jackson County District Attorney's Office along with the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations, the Alabama Attorney General Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, officials said.

Evidence obtained during this investigation was presented to a Jackson County grand jury which handed down an indictment charging Byron Keith Shirey on the charge of murder.

He was arrested without incident at his residence in Dutton and is being held at the Jackson County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
