Several apartment units were damaged in the blaze reported shortly before 7 p.m. at the Cloverdale Circle complex.
The first firefighters on the scene saw heavy smoke from Hixson Pike and fire coming from the rear of one of the apartment buildings, a news release from department spokeswoman Lindsey Rogers said.
Chattanooga police officers were helping evacuate the apartments as firefighters arrived.

Fire officials say 4-5 families were displaced but no residents were injured.
Two firefighters were taken to a hospital with heat-related injuries, Rogers said.
A dog died in the fire, but firefighters were able to save a snake from one of the apartments.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
