NASHVILLE - State Rep. Mike Carter, hospitalized earlier this month for the coronavirus, said Tuesday he is "feeling much, much better today.

"Moved to a regular room last night," the Ooltewah Republican stated on Twitter. "Up and moving around, breathing easily. Hope to be home very soon."

Carter, who was admitted on Aug. 16 to an Erlanger Medical Center intensive care unit, also stated he "can't thank the fantastic staff at Erlanger enough. Our community is lucky to have such a first rate hospital. Thanks again for your prayers."

Carter, chair of the House Civil Justice Subcommittee, has previously said that after testing positive for the coronavirus he was initially asymptomatic and self-quarantined. But "then symptoms appeared and very quickly worsened," he said earlier this month.

Carter, a former judge, wound up missing the Aug. 10-12 special session of the General Assembly, where he had been expected to play a major role on a bill making it much harder for people to sue businesses, nursing homes, hospitals, nonprofits and others over COVID-19 claims. He attended the July 31 Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser with other prominent Republicans, and was photographed with and without a mask at the event. It's not known whether he got infected there or elsewhere.
