A Hamilton County Sheriff's Office corrections deputy was assaulted by an inmate Wednesday, according to a news release.

Marvin Dewayne Thompson assaulted the deputy on the first floor of the Hamilton County Jail as he attempted to escape a cell, according to the sheriff's office.

Thompson first "defeated the cell door, then overpowered the corrections deputy taking his pepper spray and attempting to take jail keys," the news release states.

The corrections deputy, who has not been identified, suffered an injury to the right eye that requires medical treatment and time off of duty.

"Every day our corrections personnel perform an extremely difficult and often dangerous job to ensure both the safety of our community as well as inmates in our correctional facility," Chief Deputy Austin Garrett said in the release.

"Unlike law enforcement personnel who are seen daily, our corrections personnel perform their duties in a confined environment. This assault highlights the challenges they face and the incredible work they do daily," he said.

Thompson was charged with aggravated assault on police, robbery and attempted escape.

The investigation is ongoing.
