Magnitude 2.9 earthquake rocks South McMinn on Monday

A magnitude-2.9 earthquake struck in southern McMinn County, Tennessee, Monday just north of Bowater Road near Calhoun, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck about 1:23 p.m. Monday and was a little less than four miles beneath the earth's surface, USGS data showed.

The epicenter of the temblor was initially located in a wooded area about 100 yards from Bowater Road, between county roads 758, 753 and 907, according to USGS information.

A magnitude 2.9 quake is rarely felt by anyone except under especially favorable conditions, while quakes of magnitude 3 and higher can be felt be people at rest or in the upper floors of buildings.
