The Hamilton Place Mall closed more than four hours earlier than usual on Monday after threats of protesting in the area following two nights of unrest in Chattanooga.

Local demonstrators began protesting police brutality in the name of George Floyd, a black man killed by a Minneapolis police officer who knelt on his neck for almost 10 minutes.

The mall, owned by CBL Properties, closed early Saturday as well amid similar threats, which did not come to pass in that area on Saturday.

Now, after two nights of soured protests elsewhere resulting in vandalism, tear gas and more than 20 arrests in the city, the mall has closed early again after receiving threats of similar behavior in the area.

"We had received some credible information of protests in the area and made the decision to close early," Stacey Keating, a spokeswoman for CBL, told the Times Free Press.

In recent weeks, the mall has been open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. during the week under its new COVID-19 schedule, but the doors closed at 2:45 p.m. on Monday in light of the unrest.

Hamilton County also closed both of its courthouses three hours early on Monday, following vandalism at the Georgia Avenue courthouse on Saturday and Sunday, which resulted in three arrests and a crowd of people being tear gassed by the county sheriff's office.
