The Dalton Police Department is warning against phone scammers posing as members of the police after a suspicious call was made to an area resident. The scam is the first reported incident in Dalton within the last few years, according to a news release.

A Dalton resident received a call Tuesday evening with the caller ID displaying the Dalton Police Department's official phone number. The scammer pressed for the victim's social security number and other personal information, the release states.

According to the victim, the scammer had a Hispanic accent and threatened to imprison the victim if the verbal instructions were not followed.

It is not standard for government agencies to seek personal information or issue threats by phone, Dalton police said.

If you receive a call from the Dalton Police Department, request the name of the person calling, hang up and call the police department at 706-278-9085 to confirm the call.
