NOTE: Tennessee Department of Health and other state department numbers are updated at set times during the day, so there may be a lag in the reporting of state-level data.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Tennessee increased to 4,362 on Tuesday up from Tuesday's total of 4,138, according to the Tennessee Department of Health's daily virus update. There have been 79 deaths from the virus statewide.

In Georgia, confirmed COVID-19 cases jumped by more than 1,000 in one day — from 8,818 to 9,901.

Hamilton County has 94 confirmed cases and has reported nine deaths related to COVID-19, including the death of a child under five years old. Davidson County has the most confirmed cases in the state with 946, followed by Shelby County with 912.

In the Chattanooga area, Bradley County has reported at least 28 cases, Marion County has 21 reported cases, Grundy County has confirmed 16 cases, McMinn, Meigs and Polk counties each have three and Sequatchie County each has one confirmed case.

At least 449 people are hospitalized due to the virus in Tennessee and at least 56,618 tests have been conducted in Tennessee, as of Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Georgia has 9,901 cases and at least 362 people have died from COVID-19 as of Wednesday at 3 p.m. About 1,993 people are currently hospitalized, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. Most of Georgia's cases are in Atlanta and North Georgia and the Southwest Georgia community of Albany.

Kathleen Toomey, commissioner for the Georgia Department of Health acknowledged the steady increase in a press release Tuesday.

"We know that increased testing means the number of positive cases will increase. But along with that, we are also seeing further spread of COVID-19 throughout Georgia,"  Toomey said in the release. "We can stop the spread of COVID-19 in Georgia, but every Georgian must take personal responsibility now and follow the prevention guidance to keep this deadly virus from taking any more precious lives."

Though the state does not release the number of tests completed by county, about 38,787 tests have been conducted across Georgia, as of Wednesday at 3 p.m.

And in Alabama, the total of confirmed cases rose to 2,369 from Tuesday's total of 2,105. There have been 66 reported deaths in the state and 18,982 tests have been conducted as of Wednesday at 3 p.m. Currently, about 314 people have been hospitalized due to the virus since March 13.

How we report on coronavirus numbers

Confirmed case data only provides a snapshot of the coronavirus outbreak and shouldn't be taken as an accurate reflection of how many people are currently infected.

Laboratories are required to report positive COVID-19 test results to local health departments, such as the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department, as soon as results are available in order to support a rapid response. The Tennessee Department of Health and other state department numbers are updated at set times during the day, so there may be a lag in the reporting of state level data.

It's impossible to know how many COVID-19 tests are pending, since both public and private labs are used for testing, and providers do not report when a sample is collected. Negative results are sometimes available depending on the agency and its method of tracking COVID-19.

The Times Free Press uses numbers from credible county, state, national and international public health agency sources in our coverage of the coronavirus and other infectious diseases. The newspaper also may report on COVID-19 cases that the newspaper has independently verified in an effort to keep our readers as informed as possible.

All data are subject to variations and changes based on access, availability, methods and other factors that can affect data collection, making health data rarely perfect.
