Authorities have positively identified human remains found Tuesday near DeSoto State Park in DeKalb County, Alabama, as those of a man reported missing in Rome, Georgia, four years ago.
The remains were found by a contractor working on a home near Mentone, where the body was discovered in a wooded area, authorities said this week.
DeKalb County Sheriff's Office spokesman Tyler Pruett said Friday that no foul play is suspected and investigators believe the death is possibly self-inflicted. The Times Free Press does not typically identify victims of suicide.
The man was reported missing in July 2016 and was believed to have been at DeSoto State Park, Pruett said Friday. The remains found Tuesday were on private property adjacent to park land.
Authorities said earlier this week that the remains found were "several years old," and a forensic examination was performed at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville.
Dozens of officers from several agencies helped search the area on Tuesday and Wednesday, officials said.
