A 17-year-old girl was killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday night on Interstate 75 in Ringgold, Georgia.

Bailey Smith, of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, died in the crash, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Four other people were injured in the accident.

The crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. Monday on I-75 near mile marker 351. Smith was in the front passenger seat of a 2002 Ford Explorer. The driver was a 17-year-old boy from Dalton, Georgia, authorities said.

The Georgia State Patrol said the motorist was driving too fast for conditions and failed to maintain his lane of travel.

The Explorer began to rotate counterclockwise, traveled off the west shoulder of the roadway and hit a guardrail on Smith's side of the vehicle, police said. The vehicle went through the guardrail and down an embankment before overturning. Smith, the driver and another 17-year-old boy in the backseat all were ejected. All five people in the car were injured and taken to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga.

Smith died later at the hospital, authorities said.

The state patrol said no one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
