Five people are dead after a minivan drove under a tractor-trailer on Interstate 24 east near the Rossville Boulevard/Central Avenue exit in Chattanooga on Monday morning.

Chattanooga police have not released the names of the deceased, their ages or confirmed whether they were related but have said they were all adults and from out of state.

The van, a Honda Odyssey, was traveling east on I-24 at around 10:17 a.m. when it veered off the road and struck the rear of the tractor-trailer that had been parked on the right shoulder and out of lanes of traffic.

All five passengers in the van, four men and one woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

It's not yet clear why the driver of the van left the road, according to police.

Two eastbound lanes were blocked off for several hours.

Chattanooga police ask anyone with information about the incident to call 423-698-2525 or submit a tip via the police department's mobile app. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
