A gas leak on Dayton Boulevard caused by a Friday morning construction incident led to a flood of calls from concerned residents, according to a news release from the Chattanooga Fire Department.

A large amount of gas was released after an eight-inch line was struck in the 5500 block of Dayton Boulevard next to Covenant Baptist Church.

The smell of the gas from many nearby residents caused the 911 center to experience a high volume of calls, the release states.

Crews are currently on scene to fix the leak.

Once the leak is repaired, it will take time for the smell to dissipate, according to the release.
