The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced Monday plans to help during the upcoming academic year with the award of nearly $715,000 in literacy grants across Tennessee.

According to the foundation's website, the funding is to assist in implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs, purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives and purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs.

Locally, East Brainerd Elementary School and the Boys & Girls Club of Chattanooga each will receive around $2,000 to help their youth literacy programs.

A comprehensive list of grant recipients may be found online at www.dgliteracy.org. The grants awarded to Tennessee organizations are expected to positively impact the lives of more than 140,000 youth.
