Two groups of people had a shoot-out at the Hamilton Place mall on Thursday evening, as multiple shots rang out and one woman was injured.

The Chattanooga Police Department responded to the "shots fired" call shortly before 6 p.m.

Spokesperson Elisa Myzal said suspects were not in custody as of 8 p.m., although it was not considered an active shooter situation.

Myzal confirmed that one woman was injured. Police initially said the woman was shot, but later said that was not so -- that she "was injured while trying to leave the area."

"It is a non-life-threatening injury," Myzal said. "It was initially reported as a graze wound."

A preliminary investigation by Chattanooga Police revealed two groups fired at each other, with at least one person from each group firing shots.

"The person injured is not believed to be the intended target," police said on Twitter. "CPD is still going store-by-store for any additional potential victims."

Mike Foose, general manager of Rodizio Grill in the mall, told the Times Free Press he heard 10 shots at around that time while he was working inside the mall. He said he saw the one woman get injured, but said, "I didn't see any other injuries."

Skylar Ellis, 16, was working at the Journeys Kidz store when she heard a sound that she first thought was someone dropping something heavy.

"Then I heard the second shot and I was like, 'We gotta go, we gotta run,'" she said.

Benjamin Griswold, 19, was also working at the store when he heard the gunshots, "at least 10, and fast," he said.

Emily Barnett, 19, was working at Molly Green next door.

"I was in the back of the store, and my coworkers were in the front," she said. "I heard the first two shots and then I saw my coworkers running to the back."

Skylar, who attends Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School, said the school had an active shooter drill Thursday.

"We just did this today at school," Skylar said.

"But we aren't trained for an active shooter at the mall," Emily added.

Guests in the mall were ushered into commercial hallways for safety, Foose said.
