Chattanooga Times Free Press wins top Tennessee journalism award

The Chattanooga Times Free Press on Friday received the Tennessee Press Association's top award in the large newspaper division of the statewide journalism contest.

In all, the newspaper received 25 awards at the press association's annual awards luncheon, held in Franklin. For the seventh time in eight years, the Times Free Press took home the top award, General Excellence, in the category for the state's largest papers.

The award is given to the newspaper with the highest number of points, based on awards won.

The awards, which are sponsored by the University of Tennessee, recognized the best work done in 2020 by journalists across the state.

The Times Free Press received the following awards:

- First place for feature writing, headline writing, feature photography, graphics and illustrations, make-up and appearance, best special issue, best humor column and Sunday editions.

- Second place for investigative reporting, sports coverage, sports writing, editorials, feature photography, humor column, public service, breaking news, news reporting and coronavirus feature writing.

- Third place for feature writing, personal column, single editorial, news photography, digital presentation and coronavirus news coverage.
