The Chattanooga Police Department has opened an internal investigation into one of its officers charged with DUI after a Thursday crash in the 2000 block of Shepherd Road, according to a news release.

Traffic investigators responded at 8:41 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash, where they determined Chattanooga Police Department Neighborhood Policing Bureau Officer Jeremy Yates was the at-fault driver. He was not on duty or in his patrol vehicle at the time of the crash.

Yates, who was hired in July 2016, was placed on administrative leave Friday and will remain on leave "until a final disposition" in the investigation is reached, the release states.

Yates has been charged with DUI, following too close and possession of a weapon while under the influence.
