A man is dead and a woman is injured after a Monday night shooting on the 2600 block of Cannon Avenue, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

Officers were told by dispatch that two people with gunshot wounds had arrived at local hospitals by a private vehicle at around 11:48 p.m., according to a news release. Police arrived to find a 42-year-old woman suffering from injuries that were not considered life-threatening and Antonio Sparks, 22, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Investigators determined that the incident began when numerous shots were fired into a residence on Cannon Avenue. The woman was struck by gunfire and a man, who was inside the residence when the shooting began, left the residence and began firing at the people who were responsible for the original gunfire. During the exchange of shots, Sparks was struck and later died at a hospital, a release states.

Due to the large amount of rounds fired by several people, investigators are still trying to determine the exact actions of all involved. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the Chattanooga Police Department's homicide tip line at 423-643-5100 or to submit a tip via the CPD Mobile App. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
