Eight people were arrested Sunday night after an investigation into a cockfighting operation in Walker County, Georgia.
Sheriff Steve Wilson said in a news release that his office received a complaint of cockfighting at 473 Hurtt Road in Chickamauga.
Deputies arrived at the residence to find people gathered in an open-faced shed while two roosters were fighting inside a cage. They immediately started to flee when deputies arrived, but none of them were able to escape.
One of the roosters had spurs on its feet, which are commonly found on roosters that are used in fighting, Wilson said. Eleven dead chickens also were found on the property.
Other sets of spurs and alcoholic beverage containers were found elsewhere on the property. Walker County animal control personnel were called to take care of the fowl.
Arrested were Shane Lamar Dempsey, 37, of Chickamauga; Michael Shane Frye, 46, of Lafayette; David Brian Long, 37, of Rossville; Christian Lea Nicole Clingan, 22, of Chickamauga; Richard Carter Lusk, 48, of Chickamauga; Robert Edward Clingan, 50, of Chickamauga; and Kevin Wayne Smith, 42, of Chickamauga.
Those seven people were arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, obstruction of an officer and loitering, prowling.
Cody Dewayne Smith, 30, of Trenton, was inside the residence at the time and had a felony warrant from Hamilton County. Smith was arrested on a fugitive charge and taken to the Walker County Jail.
