Man killed in Friday night shooting following argument on Duncan Avenue in Chattanooga

The Chattanooga Police Department is investigating a Friday evening shooting on the 2000 block of Duncan Avenue that killed a 39-year-old man.

Police responded at 7:53 p.m. after receiving a report of a person being shot, according to a Saturday morning news release from the police department. Upon arrival, officers found Benitiez Williams suffering from a gunshot wound.

After police secured the area, Hamilton County EMS responded and transported Williams to a local hospital with a life-threatening injury.

"The victim later succumbed to his injuries," the release said.

Investigators with the Violent Crimes Unit learned that the victim had been in a "verbal argument when a suspect produced a firearm and began shooting," the release said.

Chattanooga police ask that anyone who has information regarding the incident call the homicide tip line at 423-643-5100 or submit a tip via the Chattanooga Police Department's mobile app. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

"The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when available," the release said.
