A 52-year-old Winchester, Tennessee, man is being held on a $1 million bond after he allegedly shot his 72-year-old father to death behind a small storage facility.

Michael Edwin Grant is charged with homicide in the death of his father, Michael Grey Grant, and he is being held at the Franklin County Jail as authorities work to sort out what happened, according to a statement issued by Winchester police Chief Richard Lewis.

Grant is charged with criminal homicide, Lewis said.

The shooting happened at 11:13 a.m. Thursday at the Speedy Self Storage on South College Street on the south end of town, according to Lewis. The elder Grant was known to park his 18-wheeler behind the storage business, the chief said.

The older man was shot as he sat in his truck, he said.

After the shooting, Lewis said the son then went to his mother's residence, also in Franklin County, and told her what happened, and she in turn called 911 dispatchers and reported the incident. She told authorities her son was coming down to the police station to turn himself in, Lewis said.

Twelfth Judicial District Attorney General Mike Taylor said he understood that both men were truck drivers and longtime local residents.

"Apparently they got into some kind of argument and [Michael Grey Grant] was shot multiple times with a revolver," Taylor said Monday. He said an autopsy is being performed and results could take some time.

Grant was taken into custody while apparently on his way to the Winchester Police Department by Winchester police Sgt. Cody Bishop and Officer Rocky Thomas, Lewis said.

Officials in Franklin County General Sessions Court said Grant did not yet have an attorney on record. He faces a first appearance on the charge June 7, court officials said.

Although authorities believe there were harsh words between the father and son before the killing, the motive remains unknown, according to Lewis and Taylor. Winchester detectives continue to investigate, they said.
