A student from Southern Adventist University was struck by a car while using a crosswalk Monday morning, according to the Collegedale Police Department.

The incident happened shortly before 8 a.m. in the 4800 block of College Drive East. The school zone lights were activated for morning traffic between Collegedale Academy Elementary School and the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church when the accident occurred, according to a news release.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was treated at the scene by emergency personnel and later transported to a local hospital, according to police.

In a released statement, Collegedale police officials said they would like to "remind drivers to not only be on alert while driving through school zones, being mindful of their reduced speeds and any other distractions that would impair their driving abilities, but to also be vigilant while approaching any crosswalks."

An investigation is ongoing.
