A 27-year-old man is dead after a police pursuit involving the Georgia State Patrol ended with a crash on Highway 153, according to the Chattanooga Police Department.

Around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Chattanooga police responded to a crash in the 6800 block of Highway 153. It was determined through investigation that the vehicle involved in the crash, a Hyundai Sonata, was initially pursued by Georgia State Patrol troopers.

The people inside the Hyundai Sonata "fired shots at Georgia State Patrol and later at Tennessee Highway Patrol as the pursuit entered Chattanooga," a news release stated. As the vehicle continued north on Highway 153, it lost control and left the roadway north of Boy Scout Road, police said. Emergency services transported the driver, whose name has not been released, to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second suspect was later apprehended by Hamilton County Sheriff's Office deputies and Chattanooga police officers.

Chattanooga police were not involved in the pursuit and the Georgia State Patrol is the lead agency on the shooting and pursuit investigation. Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to call 423-698-2525 or submit a tip through the Chattanooga Police Department's mobile app. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
