Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the Aug. 12 shooting incident at Hamilton Place mall, Chattanooga police said Wednesday.

"Both suspects are juveniles, both 17 years of age," spokesperson Jeremy Eames said in a news release. "One faces charges of inciting to riot, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon and vandalism. The other faces charges of reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm."

Elisa Myzal, a public information officer with the department, said investigators were able to identify the suspects using video footage from the mall's security camera system.

"The mall has a state-of-the-art camera system that we were able to use. Investigators watched that video back and used it to determine these suspects were the individuals on the footage," she said.

Because the suspects are minors, their names have not been released.

The shooting broke out shortly before 6 p.m., and a preliminary investigation by Chattanooga Police revealed two groups fired at each other, with at least one person from each group firing shots. One person was injured during the incident while trying to leave the area where the shooting was taking place. No other injuries were reported, though many inside the mall said they were terrified when they heard the initial shots go off.

Skylar Ellis, 16, was working at the Journeys Kidz store when she heard a sound that she first thought was someone dropping something heavy.

"Then I heard the second shot and I was like, 'We gotta go, we gotta run,'" she said at the time.

Benjamin Griswold, 19, was also working at the store when he heard the gunshots, "at least 10, and fast," he said.

Emily Barnett, 19, was working at Molly Green next door with her coworkers. After they heard the first two shots, she said they took off running to the back of the store to hide.

Ellis, who attends Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School, said the school had an active shooter drill earlier that day at school.

"We just did that today at school," she said.

"But we aren't trained for an active shooter at the mall," Barnett said.

As of Wednesday, Myzal said the Chattanooga Police Department is still following up on leads related to the Hamilton Place mall shooting. The case remains open.
