A woman was rescued during an apartment fire on Labor Day in Chattanooga, according to a Chattanooga Fire Department news release.

Firefighters arrived at an apartment complex at 1112 Grove St. at around 8:51 a.m. and found out there could be people trapped inside. Amid heavy smoke, firefighters found a woman hanging out of a second-floor window yelling and screaming for help. She was rescued and later taken to a local hospital for treatment. No one was found in the remaining apartments.

The fire eventually broke through the roof, causing firefighters to be removed from the building for safety reasons. Once the fire was extinguished, it was determined that the entire building of eight units had been impacted by the fire. Half of the building was destroyed and the other half sustained smoke and water damage, the release states.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Red Cross was contacted to assist residents.
