ORIGINAL STORY: The wild start to 2022 will continue as rain changes over to snow late this evening into the overnight hours. The transition will occur from west to east between 9 p.m. and midnight, according to our news partner WRCB Channel 3. The highest amounts will likely fall east of the Interstate 75 corridor, where 1 to 2 inches per hour snowfall rates could occur. Ground temperatures are still very warm, which could cut into snowfall totals to a certain extent, especially in the lower valley elevations.

Winter storm warnings are posted for McMinn, Monroe, Cherokee, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer and eastern Polk counties. Two to 7 inches will be possible in these areas with locally higher amounts in the higher elevations. Jackson County, Alabama, is also under a Winter Storm Warning where 1 to 3 inches will be possible.

The rest of the area is under a winter weather advisory. A dusting of 2 inches will be possible in the valley and across North Georgia. Plateau communities could receive 1 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts, and the snow should subside by 4 to 7 a.m. Monday.
