The search for Chattanooga's new chief of police could have a slate of three finalists by the end of this week, according to Mayor Tim Kelly's office.

The first round of interviews is currently underway, said the mayor's chief of staff, Joda Thongnopnua.

"Three finalists will be announced by the end of this week or by the start of the following week," he said.

Police Executive Research Forum, a nonprofit organization enlisted by the city to help with the search, is conducting the first and second rounds of interviews, while the mayor's office will conduct the third and fourth rounds, said Kelly's chief of staff, Joda Thongnopnua.

The Police Executive Research Forum has helped solicit applications from 39 people from 18 states while providing prescreening and interviewing to narrow the list, Thongnopnua said. He did not respond to a question asking how many applicants were being interviewed in the first round.

The city's nationwide search began in November after a series of public comment sessions seeking input on the qualities and skillset needed for the job. The job listing called for applicants who are effective leaders with the ability to inspire confidence and who have a commitment to community accountability.

The mayor has repeatedly expressed the importance of hiring the right candidate, often referring to it as "the most important decision" of his career.

Former Chattanooga Police Chief David Roddy retired after 26 years on the force at the end of July. Deputy Chief Eric Tucker is serving as interim chief.
