As COVID-19 cases increase, nine Hamilton County public schools are shifting to remote learning for the rest of the week, and several will remain virtual until next Tuesday.
Spring Creek and Ooltewah Elementary schools, along with STEM School ninth and tenth graders, are going virtual Thursday and Friday of this week.
Rivermont, Nolan, Harrison and Hixson Elementary schools and Chattanooga Center for Creative Arts are shifting to remote learning Thursday through Monday.
The school closures are "due to multiple data points related to the impact of COVID-19 on operations," according to a news release.
The state of Tennessee prohibits entire school districts from shifting to remote learning, but individual schools may shift to virtual learning for a period of up to five calendar days if a waiver request is submitted and approved by the state commissioner of education, the release states.
Normal Park Museum Magnet School earlier this week notified parents that 27 people associated with the school's two campuses have tested positive for the virus, but both campuses remain open for in-person learning.
