A letter from the Diocese of Knoxville sent to parents and faculty Friday announced the resignation. A reason for the departure was not provided.

"This is to inform you that Kyle Schmitt has resigned as president of Notre Dame High School, effective immediately," wrote Sedonna Prater, superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese, in the letter dated Feb. 25. "We extend our best wishes to Mr. Schmitt as he pursues other opportunities in his career. I am pleased to announce that Laura Swenson will remain as principal at NDHS."

Schmitt was announced as the next president of Notre Dame in April 2021 and began formal duties in July. He succeeded former school president George Valadie, who retired that year.

According to a diocesan news release at the time, Schmitt worked previously as the principal of St. Francis de Sales School in Lake Zurich, Illinois, before moving to Chattanooga with his wife and four children.

Prater wrote in her letter last week the school has started the process of searching for a new leader.
