A car fire was blocking two lanes of I-75 heading southbound at mile marker 346 in Catoosa County Friday morning, according to a report from Michael Burns, Georgia State Patrol public information officer.

A witness to the fire confirmed that it was a Georgia State Patrol cruiser in flames, and said he saw that the officer got out safe.

"Looks like he did [get out safe], he was pulling all his gear out, saving what he could," William Thompson wrote in a messaging app.

Thompson said he was driving by when he saw the fire. He slowed down to make sure the officer was okay when he saw smoke and no emergency vehicles, but two or three other people were already stopped to help.

The Catoosa Fire Department was on scene, the state patrol reported. There was no indication of when the incident happened, or how long that side of the highway will be impassable.
