Democrat Katie Perkins is vying for the District 8 seat on the Hamilton County school board to represent the East Ridge area.

"I have been a teacher all of my adult life, and since becoming a parent, my perception has broadened as far as the educational needs of children are concerned," Perkins, a mother of three, said in an email. "I have the highest dedicated interest in the welfare of all children in the community."

Perkins, who holds a bachelor's degree in communications and a master's in art, said her education, determination and skills as a listener and observer will make her a quality member of the school board.

She said she believes public education is of great importance, and if elected, she hopes to acquire additional funding for schools to hire more teachers and aides.

"I have heard from teachers and administrators that more counselors and social supports are needed," Perkins said. "I also hope to improve facilities."

When asked why the people of District 8 should vote for her, she said she has the motivation and energy to be a devoted school board representative.
