East Ridge man, 45, dies in custody in Jackson County, Alabama

An East Ridge, Tennessee, man died in custody Thursday in Jackson County, Alabama, according to a news release.

About 1 p.m. CDT Thursday, Phillip Dodson, 45, was discovered "in the process of hanging himself from a bed inside his cell" at the Jackson County Jail, sheriff's office officials said Friday in the release.

Corrections officers and emergency medical personnel attempted to render aid and Dodson was taken to the Jackson County Hospital emergency room where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the death, which is standard protocol with any in-custody death, officials said. No further information was provided.
