Victim identified in fatal crash on I-75 near Ooltewah

The identity of a man killed by a vehicle on I-75 on Sunday has been released, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Traffic investigators determined that John D. Hess, 52, was walking northbound on Interstate 75 when he was struck by a vehicle at around 6:45 a.m. He was near the 13.6-mile marker just north of the Lee Highway exit in Ooltewah.

J. Matt Lea, the communications director for the sheriff's office, said it was not clear how Hess arrived on the interstate. No nearby vehicles were found to which he might have a connection.

Hess also had no identification documents on him. Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident, a release states.

There are currently no charges pending against the vehicle's driver.
