As he and his colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly wrap up the legislative session, Republican state Sen. Jeff Mullis has endorsed Steven Henry to replace him in Georgia's 53rd District.

In a statement released Monday, Mullis touted Henry's leadership in Catoosa County.

"I have seen first-hand how dedicated Steven Henry is to serving the public. His record as chairman of the Catoosa County Board of Commissioners is impeccable. His policies led to economic growth, a growing population and a community that is prospering," Mullis wrote.

"He is pro-life, pro-gun, pro-law enforcement, will protect our civil liberties and will protect the rights of parents and students in our classrooms. He is a man that takes his faith seriously and demonstrates his conservative principles on a daily basis. He not only talks the talk, but he absolutely walks the walk."

Mullis also wrote that Henry is the fighter Northwest Georgia residents need to represent them under the Gold Dome.

Mullis serves as chair of the rules committee.

Asked why he has chosen to leave the seat after 22 years, Mullis said he hopes to focus more attention on his family, as well as continue his recovery from Achilles tendon surgery.

In addition to Henry, Republican Colton Moore has qualified to run for the senate seat vacated by Mullis. The primary is May 24.
