Drive Time: Lookout Mountain is located 8 miles south of downtown Chattanooga and its town hall is an 18-minute drive from the Tennessee Aquarium.

Locator Maps: Both Lookout Mountain, Georgia, (an incorporated city) and Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, have the neighborhoods of St. Elmo and Lookout Valley directly beneath them, with Trenton, Georgia, approximately 25 minutes to their southwest.

Curb Appeal: The median home price in Lookout Mountain was $740,000 in 2021 according to the Greater Chattanooga Realtors Association.

Breakfast: On the Georgia side, you can start off your day with the Starbucks at Rock City for breakfast. The Mapco market and gas station also sells several varieties of breakfast biscuits. On the Tennessee side, the recently opened Canopy Coffee and Wine Bar serves breakfast breads and pastries in the morning.

Lunch: Rock City Grill and Cafe 7 offers a stunning view off the mountain from Lover's Leap. Its hours vary depending on the season but the excellent food and service do not. Try the Caramelized Georgia Vidalia onion dip and the shrimp and grits. The bar features regional craft beers and a full wine list.

The Mountain Market has numerous comfort food takeout options — including poppyseed chicken, green bean casserole and stuffed potatoes — as well as first-rate sandwiches featuring Boar's Head meats.

Dinner: Cafe on the Corner, can hold its own with any restaurant in town and has both indoor and outdoor dining with a patio fire pit. Start with the crawfish beignets and end with the flourless chocolarte cake.

Ribbon Cutters: Canopy Coffee and Wine Bar opened in late spring of 2021 in the same small shopping center on the Tennessee side of the Mountain that's home to the Mountain Escape Spa, the Mountain Market, Cafe on the Corner and the post office. Along with the expected coffee drinks and breakfast breads, it serves wine, cheese plates and such in the early evenings and is open air in good weather.

In The News: The sparkling new Lookout Mountain, Georgia, city hall and fire station along Lula Lake Road is opening in early spring and plans call for a small row of shops and a restaurant or two. On the drawing board for at least 10 years, it figures to give the Georgia side of the Mountain some of the same commercial amenities that the Tennessee side has long enjoyed.

A project to add several walking and hiking trails to the mountain is also set to begin during 2022 at a cost of $110,000.

Happy Place: The whole mountain. Walking trails can be found at several points on your way up or down. Locals — when they're not walking on the numerous sidewalks that dot the mountain — can often be found gathering for youth sports events, tennis and kids' play dates at the Commons, a public park with pavilion and bath rooms, a top-flight playground, tennis courts and ball fields.

Point Park on the Tennessee side ($7) provides a stunning view of Chattanooga and Moccasin Bend, as well as several historical plaques explaining what took place there during the Civil War. Sunset Rock on the West Brow offers a similarly spectacular view of Lookout Valley for free.

Shop Talk: Shopping on either side of Lookout Mountain is limited but charming. On the Tennessee side, the Mountain Escape Spa offers not only the expected collections of massages and aroma therapy, but women's sleepwear and assorted small gifts and lotions. On the Georgia side, the Fairyland Pharmacy on McFarland Road is an extensive pharmacy, gift shop and hardware store all rolled into one.
