Four-year-old Hayden Wright, wearing shorts and tennis shoes, rang the McPeaks' doorbell about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.
"My husband got up to answer the door and (the 4-year-old) just said he needed something and left," said Anna McPeak.
As the boy wandered across the street, her husband called the police, Mrs. McPeak said.
According to reports, the boy went inside a house on the other side of the street, took some Christmas presents, then headed back outside.
"When the police asked (the neighbors) about the boy, they had no idea he had been there," said Mrs. McPeak. "I have no idea where they ended up finding him."
Tennessee investigators say the little boy was found roaming his neighborhood, drinking beer and wearing a little girl's dress taken from under the neighbor's Christmas tree, The Associated Press reported.
Hayden and his mother, April Wright, 21, live with her parents a couple of houses away from the McPeaks on Blue Spruce Drive in Hixson, according to another neighbor.
Attempts Thursday to reach Mrs. Wright and the neighbors whose presents were taken were unsuccessful.
After being found by police, the boy was taken to a hospital and treated for alcohol consumption, according to the AP.
Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Janice Atkinson said the case is under investigation and the official report has not been released, but she confirmed that the sheriff's office responded to an incident involving a 4-year-old boy.
The boy's mother said she met with child protective services personnel and was told she will get to keep custody of her son, the AP reported.
"It was all very strange, a very bizarre night," said Mrs. McPeak. "You don't expect your doorbell to ring at 1 a.m. You expect even less to find a 4-year-old (on your front steps)."
