The "Vol Navy" going upstream on the Tennessee River to the University of Tennessee's football game against the University of Alabama next week will have to start north of the Watts Bar Dam.

Next Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to close the Watts Bar Lock for maintenance work over the following four weeks. Repair crews with the corps and TVA will remove the water from inside the lock to inspect, clean and paint the large lock gates, along with other repairs.

The lock, which opened in 1942, carries about 1.8 million tons of cargo and 4,500 recreational boats each year.
