1-cent education sales tax narrowly winning in Whitfield County

With nearly half of Whitfield County precincts reporting, a special 1-cent education sales tax is narrowly winning votes.

About 8:30 p.m., 1,254 people had voted in favor of the countywide tax with 1,149 voting against - a split of 52.18 percent to 47.82 percent.

Whitfield County's board of elections shows 10 of 23 precincts reporting so far.

If approved, the education special purpose local option sales tax would provide an estimated $105 million in revenue to Whitfield County and Dalton city school systems.
