Highway crews at work this week

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - Crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation will be picking up debris and litter on the roads in North Georgia this week, according to a news release.

Work is scheduled for today through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.

• Catoosa County: Interstate 75

• Dade County: State Highways 157 and 189

• Fannin County: State Highways 5, 60 and 60 Spur

• Walker County: State Highways 2 and 193

• Whitfield County: State Highway 201.


Fireworks banned in national forest

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - With the Fourth of July holiday coming up, the U.S. Forest Service reminds area residents that all fireworks are prohibited on national forest land, such as the Cherokee National Forest.

Shooting off fireworks is a federal misdemeanor that could bring fines up to $5,000 or six months in prison.

Girl, 6, overdoses on prescriptions

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Carroll County authorities are investigating after a 6-year-old girl overdosed on adult prescription medications she found in an empty trailer at her mobile home community.

Authorities say the girl ingested some of the sleeping, heart, cholesterol and anti-anxiety medications she and a friend brought into a plastic playhouse. The girl, whose name was not released, was recovering in an Atlanta hospital.


Steam engine excursion planned

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - East Tennessee residents have a chance to experience history next month when a steam engine pulls into town to pick up passengers.

The Johnson City Press reports a steam engine will arrive in Johnson City for the first time in 20 years on July 8. It will take passengers to Knoxville on Norfolk Southern Railroad through the 21st Century Steam excursion program.

Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum spokesman Mike Tilley said about 300 tickets are available for the public.


Search to resume for missing teen

BUFORD, Ga. - Authorities are expected to resume searching for a 13-year-old boy missing since the boating accident that killed his 9-year-old brother a week ago on Lake Lanier.

Authorities called off the search for Griffin Prince on Friday afternoon because of high boat traffic on the lake just north of Atlanta. Crews are expected to begin searching again early today.
