Man hit by train stable at hospital

A man is in stable condition after being struck by a train after passing out on the tracks, authorities said.

Just before 1 a.m. Thursday, Chattanooga police went just south of 1200 E. Third St., department spokesman Officer Nathan Hartwig said.

They found Robert Larson, 33, with a severe injury to his left foot, Hartwig said.

Larson was taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition, Hartwig said. Officers at the scene said Larson was intoxicated, Hartwig said.


Chlorine leak sends 3 to hospital

Three people were sent to the hospital Thursday after a chlorine leak at a downtown hotel, authorities said.

The Chattanooga Fire Department, several other fire companies and a hazardous materials team were called to the DoubleTree hotel, 407 Chestnut St., shortly after 2 p.m., spokesman Bruce Garner said.

Capt. Don Bowman, the incident commander, said two hotel employees were in the basement putting chlorine tablets in a machine that feeds into the hotel pools when a valve failed. Chlorine spewed onto the floor,, he said.

Another employee from the hotel next door later walked into the area and also was exposed, Bowman said. All three were taken to Parkridge Medical Center after coughing and complaining of difficulty breathing.

All of the residents in the floor above were ordered to stay in their rooms until the hazard was eliminated, said Assistant Chief Mack Moore, who represented the haz-mat team. The chlorine tablets were turned over to hotel management for proper disposal, he said.

The three people taken to Parkridge were expected to be treated and released, Garner said.

Fire damages Hixson duplex

An accidental kitchen fire at a duplex in Hixson resulted in no injuries Thursday afternoon, authorities said.Crews responded to a duplex fire in a kitchen at 5430 Crestview Drive, Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said.

A pan of grease was left unattended on a lit stove eye, got too hot and burst into flames, according to Capt. Anthony Moore.

The flames had already spread into the attic before firefighters could get the blaze under control, Garner said. Most of the apartment, as well as the other side of the duplex, was saved, he said.
