Hamilton County volunteers recognized for efforts

Gavin Cooley and Holly Dieken have been chosen winners of Hamilton County's 2016 Governor's Volunteer Stars Awards.

For more than three years, 9-year-old Gavin Cooley has volunteered at The Samaritan Center. Gavin's excitement, initiative and compassion make him an exemplary volunteer.

Adult winner Holly Dieken began volunteering with Center for Mindful Living about two years ago. Last year when the center had to relocate, she helped raise money for the move and organized a moving sale.

A natural handywoman, she has fixed the center's dishwasher, hung curtains and done other assorted odd jobs. The Center is a small organization with two part-time employees; Holly's contribution has meant the difference between success and failure.

"These generous citizens embody the spirit of giving, selflessly helping fulfill needs that would otherwise go unmet. I am grateful they live in our community," Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger said.
