Good Deed: Chickamauga Chapter DAR donates children's books

At the end of 2017, the Chickamauga Chapter of the DAR donated 320 books to local schools based on our strong commitment to education and children's literacy. Our participation was part of a statewide project "Read to Independence."

Books were delivered to 12 area preschool, elementary and after-school programs. More than 3,200 children will benefit from this donation. Librarians and teachers thankfully accepted books for use in libraries, classrooms and tutoring programs.

Each year, DAR members accumulate numerous hours of volunteer service in promoting literacy among children. Research has shown that students who do not read proficiently by age 10 are four times more likely to drop out of high school than competent readers. At some point in a student's education, reading is no longer just a skill to master but a means to obtain new knowledge.
