Maybe it's election fatigue.

Maybe it's 2020 fatigue.

Maybe it's fatigue of fatigue.

I'm sure you're with me, but I am so ready for today to be done.

No, not the fallout of rolling the clocks back. Take the shock of the 4:45 p.m. darkness out of the equation, and here's betting that half of you either will let your car clock be an hour ahead for the next five months or now have the correct time in your ride because of the change back.

The joy of today's conclusion is all about the end of the most poisonous political process of my lifetime. Sure, at the big kids' table they are pondering whether this is the most important election ever. Whatever.

This is the most polarizing election of my lifetime without question, and that realization allows me the hope that when this ends, there could be a chance to turn the corner into conversation rather than cable news-generated convulsions.

I am so ready to move beyond this, this divisiveness and angst and everything to a point that now even Jack Nicklaus is controversial. And worse, that controversy is potentially permanent.

Think of it this way, the election cycle ends today. Well, the voting does; the bickering and lawsuits and challenges will last from now until goodness knows when.

But will the vitriol, especially in the aftermath of what will come the next few days? If I had to guess, Joe Biden will win, Donald Trump will protest and assemble a room full of attorneys challenging all manner of things.

But what happens after that? What happens when our new president is sworn in?

Are we going to be at each other's throats over every issue, refusing to debate important topics?

I am going to hold onto the belief that America will overcome all of this. I am going to hold out that whether your guy or their guy wins, we're going to find better guys and gals the next time we do this.

I can't help but be optimistic. I am proud to be an American, regardless of who wins tonight. Or next Tuesday.

I am going to be hopeful that we Americans will demand more from our leaders.

I am eager to see the days when we focus on the exploding national debt and what that means for your children and grandchildren than the laptops or the side deals of the kids of the candidates.

I am happy today is the election, primarily because it is a great testament to our great nation.

I am happy today is Election Day, too, because I am ready for this election to be over.

Whenever that may be.
