The Fuel for School program, established 10 years ago at Hixson United Methodist Church by Barbara Fulmer and Nancy Copeland in coordination with Paul Longmire, associate minister at the church, provides nutritious food for students to take home on weekends.

The purpose of the program is to give "fuel" to students so they can be ready to learn. Sack food packages are put together by a team of volunteers who deliver the packages to schools each Thursday during the school year. The packages are given to students on Fridays.

Fuel for School started with one school and has grown to between 12 and 15 schools.
