U.N. 'powerfully powerless' to halt Syrian slaughter with resolutions

See whether you can spot the contradiction in this dispatch from The New York Times about Syria's violent suppression of dissent in that country:

"In a powerful rebuke to Syria's government, the U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday to approve a resolution that condemned President Bashar Assad's unbridled crackdown ... . [The resolution] is a nonbinding action with no power of enforcement at the world body, but it represented a significant humiliation for Assad ... ."

So there's "no power" to enforce this "powerful rebuke," and the U.N. is relying on "humiliating" Assad -- a man whose brutality toward his own people suggests he may no longer have the ability to feel shame.

More than 5,000 Syrians have died in the crackdown. "Powerful rebukes" from the U.N. are unlikely to save the next 5,000.
