Retired Hixson teacher, Chris Hockert, raises funds for earthquake ravaged Nepal

More than five years ago, retired Hixson teacher Chris Hockert heard about the dire conditions of a school in a remote area of Nepal and formed Nickels for Nepal to help.

Her educational sorority, Kappa Kappa Iota, has supported the small village school of Mijar at the base of Mount Everest since 2009.

Recent earthquakes brought the plight of Nepal to the world's attention.

Chris, along with sorority members and several Nepali professionals who live in Chattanooga, were present at a pancake fundraiser at Applebee's at Northgate, where $2,400 was raised to help repair damage and build new homes in two villages devastated by the earthquake. Thanks to those who participated in the breakfast.

Chris is a doer. She sees a need and does something about it! Her dedication for this worthy cause is amazing, and she deserves recognition for her tireless efforts to help those less fortunate.

She continues to teach us all how to be compassionate, caring citizens of the world.
