The least they can do is censure Trump and more letters to the editors

Sen. Lamar Alexander has said that Donald Trump's behavior in the Ukraine affair did not constitute an impeachable offense, but that "it was inappropriate for the president to ask a foreign leader to investigate his political opponent and to withhold United States aid to encourage that investigation."

Accordingly, I hope that the senator and his Republican colleagues will join with the Democrats in sending a strong, bipartisan message to this president that this conduct is unacceptable, by formally censuring him.

This would also reassure the American people that Congress is united in condemning such behavior and committed to protecting the integrity of our election system. Finally, it would warn the president that he must not do something equally - or even more - "inappropriate" to win re-election, which he has already shown a dangerous tendency to do with Russia and China.

Revisit schools report for insights

Two years ago a select seven-member committee issued a report on changes that could improve education in Hamilton County if decision-making were in the hands of local residents rather than a single centralized school board. After 10 months of intensive research, six members of the committee concluded that smaller school districts would result in decisions more closely aligned with the needs of neighborhood schools.

UnifiEd publicly opposed the work of this committee and rejected its findings. A group called "Stay With HCDE" opposed the committee from its inception, accusing its members of being elitist and insinuating that racism played a role in its deliberations. (It should be noted that the committee concluded that under a local school board, the three Signal Mountain schools would become more racially diverse, not less.)

Ultimately the opponents of creating a local school district on Signal Mountain were able to sway public opinion against the conclusions in the report, and the Town Council decided not to pursue the idea further.

Perhaps the Good Government Coalition and Hamilton Flourishing might want to revisit that report as they seek solutions to the problems confronting schools in our county.

Respect Trump; he is all of our president

With so much opposition against our president, it is amazing that he has accomplished as much as he has.

I've never seen so much animosity against a person as there has been toward Trump. He could not possibly have told all of the lies or done all of the evil things said of him. You would think he was Satan.

Trump is our leader, and he will be again for the next four years. It is Trump and us against our enemies, and there are many. If we stand together, we will not be defeated. Love our country more than you hate Trump.

And as a side note, we will miss the columns by contributor Bill Stamps. May God bless him and his wife.
