Bring on this impeachment vote. It's time. It's past time.

Will Republicans circle the wagons and give Donald J. Trump - the most corrupt and "useful idiot" president this country has ever known - a pass? Probably. But impeachment is absolutely the right thing to do.

Trump supporters and some pundits argue that it's too divisive for the country.

We argue: No, it is not.

What's divisive is Donald Trump.

What's divisive has been his acceptance of Russian intervention in our elections and very democracy.

What's divisive has been his invitation to foreign powers - over and over again, even on camera - to intervene in our elections and our democracy.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is absolutely right: "Our democracy is what is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act because he is trying to corrupt, once again, the election for his own benefit."

As she spoke Thursday, instructing House committee chairmen to move forward with articles of impeachment against Trump, she explained: "The president has engaged in abuse of power undermining our national security and jeopardizing the integrity of our elections. His actions are in defiance of the vision of our founders and the oath of office that he takes to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

We saw it in 2016 and we've seen it now with Ukraine.

God, help us, how many have we not seen? How much do we not know about?

As emboldened as Trump was the day after Robert Mueller testified to Congress about the Russian intervention (he immediately called the new Ukrainian president to again invite election help), how emboldened would he be once more if the House took no action following the testimonies of recent weeks - testimonies that leave no doubt about his guilt?

Donald Trump must be impeached. If he is not, ask yourselves what would be his next move? Would he declare himself our king? Our supreme ruler? Would he issue an executive order making himself our forever president?

Don't laugh. He is that crazy.

Let us hope and pray that our senators and representatives are not. Because these votes - the yeas and nays of impeachment - are the literal life or death of our democracy.

They took an oath to protect our democracy, our Constitution - each one saying, "So help me God."

These votes will be on their souls.
