ROME, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia physician is running for a U.S House seat being vacated by retiring Republican Tom Graves.

Dr. John Cowan of Rome announced Tuesday that he would run as a Republican in northwest Georgia's 14th district.

Cowan cites his heath care and business experience as reasons people should vote for him.

"We spend more on healthcare than any developed nation yet have declining life expectancy and worse health," the neurosurgeon said in a statement. "Healing a broken healthcare system will go a long way toward putting us back on the right path."

He pledged to oppose abortion while supporting gun rights, religious freedom and border protection. Cowan is also the CEO of a toy distributor.

Two other Republicans have also announced for the race. Marjorie Greene, who had been running in the 6th Congressional District in suburban Atlanta shifted her candidacy to the 14th. Also running is Lookout Mountain Air Force veteran Clayton Fuller. No Democrats have yet announced in the Republican-dominated district.

Graves announced in December that he wouldn't seek a sixth term in November.
