Yusuf Hakeem to face Demetrus Coonrod in runoff for District 9 City Council seat

Long-serving councilman Yusuf Hakeem will face Demetrus Coonrod in a run-off election April 11 for the District 9 seat on the Chattanooga City Council.

The district saw a four-way race, with Hakeem taking 954 votes and Coonrod claiming 600.

John Kerns, 37, and Pat Benson Jr., 27 received 491 and 262 votes respectively.

Hakeem, 68, won five elections between 1990 and 2006, and won a tight race for the post in 2013.

Coonrod, 40, is vice chairwoman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party,

District 9 includes East Chattanooga, Eastdale, Glenwood, Missionary Ridge and Ridgedale.
