Tennessee bill would restrict restroom use by transgender students

NASHVILLE - A Republican state legislator from Kingsport says he's going to file a bill requiring Tennessee students to use the restrooms and dressing rooms at school for the gender recorded on their birth certificates - apparently a move aimed at transgender students.

Rep. Bud Hulsey, R-Kingsport, told Bristol's WCYB-TV that his aim is to prevent boys from using girls' restrooms and vice versa.

The freshman lawmaker's remarks come a week after a federal judge in Illinois ruled that a Chicago school district violated anti-discrimination laws by denying a transgender female student access to the girl's locker room.
